Echidna 🦔

Inktober prompt – ash

Despite the looks this is not a hedgehog or porcupine – Echidnas are quite unique, along with the platypus it’s the only egg-laying mammal.

They are unique however from being able to survive forest fires.

Whilst other animals flee the scene or perish the echidna will burrow down and lower it’s body temperature and metabolism. They wait it out for the fire to pass and nuzzle their way up through the ASH. It’s suggested this might be how they survived when the dinosaurs died.

I drew this with a Hero Fude pen with Winsor and Newton purple ink on Canson 1557 180gsm bright white heavy paper.  Note that echidnas aren’t even remotely purple, apart from mine 🦔
